There are three main types of garage doors material wise. You are probably well aware of the first, steel. It is likely the most popular and widely used material for garage doors. There are two other popular types of garage doors and a few not so popular materials for garage doors. Believe it or not, there are even glass garage doors. We do not recommend glass garage doors for the average home. Is that saying about throwing stones in a glass house? It is literal with a glass garage door. So what are the top three types of materials for garage doors? An even better question, what are their pros and cons?
Steel Garage Doors
We will start off with the simplest and most popular. These garage doors have many pros and really only a couple of cons.
The Pros
Garage doors made of steel are very slick and modern in appearance. This alone makes them popular. You have many more choices to make with a steel garage door. From look to size, you can pretty much do whatever you want with them. On top of all that, steel is easy to maintain. Clean it, repaint it occasionally, and you are good.
The Cons
They dent easily. This doesn’t make them look terrible, but they don’t look as good. If you hit one hard enough by accident, you will have a hole. They are not insulated. Steel is not particularly thick, though the good news is that you can insulate them yourself.
Garage Doors Made Of Wood
Well, this might be a little too old school for some of you. Yes, there are still garage doors made of wood on the market today, and for good reason.
The Pros
They are actually quite attractive. They have that rustic look that is just classy enough for almost any home. They are also very flexible on what you can do with them. Sure there are a few fewer design options, but you can still get them in any size or form. These bad boys are tough. They do not dent like steel garage doors. They can take a real beating and come out the other side looking about the same.
The Cons
They are harder to maintain. You have to take good care of them or they will crack and splinter. The maintenance costs of wooden garage doors are often enough to turn the average person away from them. They are not popular at all in warm and humid environments. If it rains all the time where you are, then you do not want a wood garage door.
A Vinyl Garage Door
Yep, these garage door actually exist are gaining popularity on the market now. There are some pretty good reasons for this trend that you will likely agree with.
The Pros
Well for starters, these garage doors are cheap. We typically prefer the term “affordable” but “cheap” works far better in this case. Why? Because this material is way cheaper than the first two. This does not mean they are not durable. Quite the opposite. They are not only durable but require the least amount of maintenance.
The Cons
The biggest problem with a garage door made of vinyl is that once you pick a color scheme for them, it is very final. If you want to change it, you will be replacing the whole garage door. Also, like steel, they are not particularly insulated from the heat or the cold. You can still purchase insulation and have it installed on them.
