Garage doors that are automatic really help us save time, get things done quicker, and better our lives. However, if your garage door motor is on the fritz or if the power is out, you will need to know how to operate your garage door without power, by switching it over to manual. So let’s go over what you need to do to operate your garage door in manual mode. That may sound silly, but it is a little more complicated than it sounds if you have a garage door opener. It’s not just a matter of pulling it down or pushing it up. That could seriously damage your garage door opener. If it is already on the fritz, then you really do not want to do that. You also want it to still work if and when the power comes back on.
Pull The Trigger!
Not really. Do not shoot your garage door opener just because the electricity is out or something. However, almost all garage door openers have a bypass switch. A lot of them are ropes that you have to pull down. Some of the newer garage door openers have a small battery back-up that allow you to flip a switch to put in manual mode. If it is a rope, then it will usually be red at the end and easily pulled. Either way, this disengages the attachment point from the rail.
A big warning here; If the garage door is up, make sure there is no one standing underneath it and nothing of value beneath it either. Why? Because normally this will cause your garage door to come crashing down. Don’t worry, your garage door should be fine but anyone or anything beneath it certainly will not be. If possible, only switch to manual when the garage door is closed. If you must open the door again and again, don’t forget to pull the chord again, or flip the switch.
Returning To Normal Function
Keep in mind that you will want to check your garage door opener over before using it regularly, again. Once the power is restored to your home or business, make sure the chain is properly connected to the garage door opener. If your garage door opener was malfunctioning, the company you called to fix it should do this step for you.
