Have you been staring at your old garage for years and not really using it for its intended purposes? Some of us like to use our garages like we use our attics; a place to store things we wanted by never needed or really used. That can become a problem over the years. Bugs and vermin love such areas, and it is wasted space in our house. If you believe it is time to transform your garage into something new, then we can help! After all, making a living space out of your garage is rarely and easy task. Unless you have the money to hire someone else, you will have to do it yourself. Don’t worry, though because we are going to walk you through the really important parts.
Get Rid Of the Garage Door Already!
Probably the least attractive part of your garage as a living space is the garage door and its frame. You will need to have this removed or do it yourself. Then there is the matter of walling the old doorway. Remember that the walls have to be even with the old walls. Why? Because it will look bad and probably not be very sturdy otherwise. After that, there is another question… Does your home have another door other than the front door? If not, then you will need to put a door where your garage door was. A double door, glass door or even a regular old sized door will do the trick. Federal laws state that we have to have more than one exit/entrance to our houses in case of fires. It makes sense when you think about it.
Remodel The Whole Area
Don’t leave the old concrete floor alone. That is the easiest part to do as you can stick whatever you want on it with a little bit of elbow grease. Then there are the walls. You will want to redo them to make it look better than a garage. Otherwise, you will just have a glorified garage and that would be just like leaving the garage door intact. From there you can worry about windows. Don’t ignore those old windows that will never keep the room insulated from the outside. Finally, consider removing part of the old driveway directly in front of where your garage door was. Put in a cute little walkway and maybe some flowers around it. That way, it all looks natural and great!
