The Three Best Garage Door Materials

The Pros & Cons

Obviously, there are more than three types of garage doors, but there are three really good ones. The materials that don’t make the cut are glass and fiberglass. Which ones did? Steel, wood and vinyl material for garage doors. All of them have many pros and cons that really make a difference depending on your preferences. They all have a few things in common that the Fiberglass and glass garage doors don’t have. Without getting into too much detail just yet, they all last a lot longer. Obviously, throwing a stone in a glass house is a bad idea, so a glass garage door might not be your best bet. So what about our top three?

Wooden Garage Doors Pros + Cons

What makes these garage doors so great? Durability, for one. They do not dent and are great for cooler and drier areas. When it comes to the customization you can do just about anything. They are not limited at all to what color or pattern you want to do with them. On the other hand, that rustic wood look is classy enough for most as is.
What are the cons? Well, they definitely are not a great choice for homes in warm, humid, and rainy areas. That along with high maintenance time and costs make them less favorable for some folks. If not taken care of properly they will splinter and crack very quickly.

Steel Garage Doors Pros + Cons

These are definitely the most widely owned garage doors across The United States and around the world in modern

countries. They are typically very durable, and very customizable. They also have that modern look that stands out even when the whole street has them. Above all else, they are relatively easy to maintain. This is mostly due to how easy it is to clean and repaint them.
How about the cons? Well, they tend to rust if not taken care of enough. They dent very easily, so don’t hit them with your car or anything else by accident. They also offer little insulation for your garage. So, if it is really hot or really cold outside, it will be that way in your garage as well. Though, you can always add some insulation to them.

Vinyl Garage Doors Pros + Cons

These are some of the most affordable garage door materials on the market today. We do not say that lightly, either. They are durable and do not rust at all, really. They also require basically no maintenance. Just hose them down occasionally or dust them off and they will continue to look great!
The cons? Well, they are not really customizable. Once you have picked a color and paid for it, you will be paying for another one if you want a different color. Some try DIY paint jobs on them, but that always looks terrible. They also don’t offer any insulation, which can still be remedied by adding some later. We do recommend you let a professional do this, though as it isn’t the easiest material of garage door to install insulation on.
