If you are in the market for a new garage door, whether it is your first or just a new one, the decision will have a lasting impact. If you’re not in the market for a new garage door, then why are you reading this? Kidding, maybe you are considering one but not sure yet. Well, let Clarks Garage Door & Gate Repair give you a few pointers on purchasing a new garage door. Most people really just look at the price and go for the cheapest. The first tip we are going to give you is that the lowest price does not always mean the best garage door, even for that price. There is a lot that goes into finding the best garage door for you, your home and your family. Let’s get right into what that.
The First And Most Important Feature? Safety
What good is a cheap garage door if it costs you three or four times that later in property damage or hospital bills after a personal injury? If you are installing a brand new garage door on a brand new home or commercial property, consider the safety features that go along with each package. Items like garage door photo eyes are an important bit of sensors that will keep your garage door from closing on your car, lawnmower or you. Truth be told, it isn’t even legal for a garage door company to sell you a garage door package without this safety feature. So, be wary of any garage door service or retailer that does.
Garage Door Sizes Matter
No seriously, it is important to be specific about the size of garage door you get. Having a two car garage with a one car garage door will not work out terribly well. Again, cheaper is not always better. A single car garage will need a garage door size between 8’x7’ to 10’x7’, really depending on the width of your garage. Garage doors for a two car garage are always between 12’x7’ and 16’x7’. There are, of course, other garage door sizes. You may need a garage door that is taller than seven feet if you are planning to put your RV or toy hauler in it.
Choose A Suitable Garage Door Material
This really depends on two things; what you think looks good and how often you have the ability to maintain your garage door. What does that second bit mean? Well, a wooden garage door is nice but requires more maintenance than a steel garage door with normal panels. Even a treated wood garage door will rot if not properly taken care of. In a sense, finding the right garage door material is like finding the right girlfriend. You have to pick on that you not only like, but can also take care of efficiently. There are wood, steel, aluminum and vinyl garage doors. There are also glass garage doors that are impact resistant. Note that we said, “impact resistant” and not “bulletproof” or something. Just keep that in mind when looking at garage doors.
Finally, keep insulation in mind when picking a garage door. You can even buy garage doors that are already insulated these days. Those are probably your best bet. Why do you need to insulate your garage? That door leading from your home into your garage door should not be your first line of defense for the inside of your home. Your garage door needs to be. So keep the cold or hot weather out from even your garage. It is definitely better for your vehicles and whatever else you keep in your garage, too.
