To start off, let’s start with the essential security features on your garage door. Check your garage door locks and make sure they are all in excellent condition. If you do not have a key to your garage door lock, replace it and have extras made. For the more high tech garage doors, make sure you have multiple garage door openers. If your garage door does not open without the opener, consider linking your garage door opener to your mobile phone. Chances are, there is a secure app for that. You will also never truly lose your garage door opener this way. Think of it as a very advanced garage door key.
From there we are going to look at items you keep around your garage door outside. Don’t leave things lying around your driveway or yard that thieves and burglars can use to bust open your garage door. It might also be wise not to leave anything that seems valuable outside your home. Don’t make your home a target and it won’t likely be one. Try not to leave your garage door open for long periods of time, either as thieves might be driving by looking to see what you have in there. If you do have a garage door opener remote, never leave it in plain sight in your vehicle. Instead of just breaking into your car, thieves will then be able to get into your house! Finally, if you have garage windows, use glass that is not entirely see through. There is security in privacy.
Advanced Garage Door Security
First of all, a security system never hurt anyone, but it did foil a few would-be home invaders over the years. Your garage door can not only be wired with a home security system, but it can also be opened and closed with a security code. You don’t have to have a home security system for that feature. Just contact your local garage door repair service, and they will install a garage door keypad for you. Also, check with your garage door retailer or manufacturer for other security features that you can add to your garage door. Some Bad Garage Door Advice
There is currently a trend going around the internet that says to secure your garage door’s manual emergency release with a zip tie. Do NOT do this. While it might keep thieves out of your garage, it could also get someone killed. Safety should not be sacrificed for security at any point or time. Never tamper with a safety feature for any reason.
